A very popular title from our children’s library. Especially with The Little Bush Princess. Any book that has pink tutus and silk ballet slippers is bound to be high up the list before the cover is even opened!
This is wonderful example of Australian authors and illustrators showing the World the potential for greatness from the down under continent. Jackie French is a down to earth author whose love of all things Australian shines through in her words and her rhymes. She has found a niche in children’s stories because she is able to see the world through the eyes and mind of a child. With phrases such as … ‘In fact, dancing looked like so much fun that soon all the audience…were bounding and bouncing…and prancing and pouncing..bumping and jumping… and leaping and thumping…swishing and swirling…and twinkle-toe twirling..’ she engages a child’s imagination and builds their vocabulary’s. What more could you want?
If those words aren’t enough to sell you on this story then cast your eyes over Bruce Whatley’s illustrations. They are simple. They are precise…but they are full of so much imagination! The flow from one page to another with a distinct style and flare. It is such a shame that these images are locked behind the covers of a book. They should be on the walls of a gallery.
If you enjoy reading ‘Josephine Wants To Dance’ then perhaps you should think about picking up a copy of another collaboration between these artists…’Diary Of A Wombat’. You won’t be disappointed.
