what a difference hair can make

Posted by Jenny on Mar 31 2009 | Original Patterns, Sewing

pretty girl

The other day I posted about this little doll. At the time she was without hair, eyes or a little smile. Now she has all of those things and will hopefully go off to her new home soon.

pretty little face

I think that she has a pretty little face and I really like the caramel coloured wool blanketing I used for her skin. I will definitely use it again.

brown skinned baby

I’m not so sure if I like the brown linen I used for her sister’s skin….I think that linen and I have to build a bit more of a relationship before I would be happy to make and sell a linen doll. The learning curve was very steep with this sweet little brown skinned girl. I fear she might have suffered a little in the process. Sorry dolly!

swallows

Although I do love the fabric in her frock. Those little brown swallows came to me from my grandmother’s stash. The Little Bush Princess has a skirt made out of it. It’s very lovely.

girls

They were a fun pair to make and have certainly given me back some of my mojo. Goodness knows it was absent for long enough!

jitters

jitters

Minutes before it was the tiny tots turn to go on stage The Little Bush Princess had a little crisis of confidence. She wasn’t quite sure if she wanted to go on stage after all….but she did.

Once again my little girl amazed me with her confidence and her willingness to boldly go out into a world that she understands so little about.

Once again she put blind faith in all the grown up’s told her and took to the stage with her little group of dancers.

She was wonderful! They were wonderful!

It’s a humbling thing to see your four year old doing things that you couldn’t even contemplate at thirty five and counting.

My children amaze me.

promise I’m still around

dolls

Well after what seems like an eternity my desire to sew something…anything…seems to have walked back into the building. These two ladies testify to this. Well the little brown linen one has been sitting on my work bench in varying degrees of ‘finished-ness’ for about a fortnight now…and she’s still not finished but I’m getting there.

on the way

Granted they need a little bit more than just a fringe to class them as having hair. Eyes that aren’t pins would be a nice addition and for the more modest lass, perhaps a frock would take the eye away from one’s underwear…but some thing is better than nothing.

Not that I have been doing nothing. I (you should read that as my husband) did manage to refurbish an old shop fitting into a thing that my dreams are made of!

re furb

This time last week I had a bee firmly buzzing in my bonnet that I had to have a new bookcase for the children’s story books. Not just any book case either. It had to be a display bookcase so that they could see the glorious bright pictures on the covers. I wanted them to be enticed to read books that they hadn’t seen for a while. I wanted their books to be exciting. I often think that it’s almost criminal that great artists work is locked inside the covers of children’s books or sandwiched next to others on shelves, never being seen. Let’s face it. With a mother as obsessed with children’s books as much as I am it was inevitable that they would have a lot of books. I just had nooo idea how many until I corralled them all together in the one place like this!

bookcase

Thank goodness for those huge drawers underneath. Without them I would still be looking for a storage solution for the hundreds of kilos of books that we own. I think the only way to quantify them is by the kilo!

With Fred the Cotton Monster atop I think that it looks fabulous. The best part is that The Little Bush Princess is having a ball with all these books at her disposal. Not that they always weren’t…but it’s all in the presentation when your talking sales!

Every night it’s like she gets to visit a book store and pick anything she wants…for FREE…and then toddle off to the big bed and get under the big bed blue booky blanket for a fresh and exciting new read (even if she’s read it before!)

You’ve got to love that….and how much was the bookcase. Initially free. I don’t think anyone around here begrudges it a little dressing up timber and a lick of paint.

What a find!

Now everyone say thank you to Kate for helping me get it home!

Thanks Kate!

puppets of my dreams!

chameleon

I have already started thinking about the Christmas list. I hope to not leave it to the last minute this year and really put a lot of thought into what the children receive this year.

When I dropped The Little Bush Princess off at preschool last week I saw one of these puppets. He was fantastic! I loved it that he had internal workings to move his eyes independently just like a real chameleon. He really appealed to me because both of my children have a soft spot for chameleons.

I quickly jotted down the companies web address and have had a look……WOW! They make the most amazing, realistic, fun and desirable puppets. Some of the best I have ever seen. Click here and have a look. I love them and want them all!

thrifty fun

Posted by Jenny on Mar 20 2009 | Day to dayness

I have to say that I think my creativity has left the building. I can’t seem to talk myself into making anything at the moment. So with nothing new to share I thought I would show you somethings that are ‘old’ but new to me.

baa baa knitted sheep

Although I haven’t been creating anything of merit I have been finding the odd nifty thing while out opp shopping. I’ve put together a little gallery of some of my favourite recent finds.

glued on eyes

I had dreams of pulling off those googly eyes and replacing them with either buttons or beads when I bought him…but that hot glue gun stuff really sticks doesn’t it?!?!

little iron

This little iron was too sweet to leave behind. Especially when it was only the evening before that The Little Bush Princess was asking if she could help me with the ironing. It goes a really well with my little bench top ironing board. She irons the face washers!

ark

A little timber Noah’s Ark. Complete with two of every animal and little Noah. For two dollars!

brrrrooom

Sesame Street wheelies. I love Grover. I can just hear him with his bizarre voice shouting ‘wagons ho!’….and Cookie Monsters wheels are cookies! Brrrooom Brrroom!!

can you tell me how to get

They were in a job lot with these fellas. I love them. Can you tell me how to get….how to get to Sesame Street?

gnomes

Gnomes

doll

A panel doll….too lovely to leave behind.

Ellie

Ellie got a little skirt and came with us to hospital.

star wars

Fantastic books….One for The Golden Child.

one for the girl

One for TLBP…..and maybe me!

Freyde Cat

chugga chugga

Maybe if I spent less time trawing the second hand shops I would find some time to actually make something!
