five things i’m loving at the moment

Posted by Jenny on Feb 28 2009 | Children inspire me, Day to dayness

1. The fantastic and spontaneous craft that’s just flying out of the children at the moment.

The Little Bush Princess’s mixed media collages. For those who aren’t

insect-ologists….those are stink bugs on the pretty pink felt flower!

2. The fact that the DANCE COSTUMES ARE ALL BUT FINISHED!

3. Having my family around me happy, safe and sound.

4. These fabulous artists, Ghostpatrol and Miso that I found via a television doco the other night. I wish I had a gram of their talent!

5. The view from my kitchen window.

Have a happy weekend loving the things and ones that mean something to you.

spectacular!

grosgrain

Grosgrain has done it again.

How on earth does the wonderful Kathleen find the time…the energy or the imagination to keep coming up with these one off beauties?

Then find it within herself to give them away???

Maybe this skirt appeals to me at the moment because I’m still in the middle of my

showgirl sew-a-thon…but I really want one of these!

For me!

Go and have a look. She has some wonderful things at the moment.

winds of change

tap tap tap

There’s a new breeze blowing through our home at the moment. In the form of a little blonde girl and a Saturday dance class.

It’s a whole new world for me. If you haven’t figured out already I’m not a joiner! I tend to be at my happiest when I’m largely being left alone. So joining in with a group of parents and their children in something like a dance class leaves me feeling like a fish out of water!

Determined to make this a positive and enjoyable experience for both her and I….I have been engaging in a bit of this….

spangly bling

Spangly, blingy stitching to create enough of these

all in a row

to outfit an entire tiny tots class.

These ones are patiently waiting for their sisters to reach this stage so they can realise their potential and have their elastic slipped in. I’m sure they will be lovely…it’s just so darn hard to find the time sometimes you know?!

So think of me this Saturday as I step waaay out of my comfort zone in an attempt to give my child the positive little childhood memories she deserves. Even if I have to be sucking my belly in the whole time trying to be someone I’m not! LOL!

Viva la joining!

common ground

Posted by Jenny on Feb 20 2009 | Children inspire me

common ground

As the mother of a boy and a girl who are exactly double and half each others age respectively I’ve found that it can sometimes be a challenge to find an activity that will both unite them and focus their energy in a productive way.

Enter painting.

There’s never a time when my kids don’t want to paint.

Although there are plenty of times I can’t get my head around the clean up afterwards.

Dress it up by giving them a stretched canvas and the creating can go on with hours…and with the added bonus that they’re too engrossed in their creating to squabble with any real commitment…I don’t usually regret adding paint to pallets.

fun

So that’s them sorted.

As for me. Lately my mind has been whirling like a washing machine.

The Little Bush Princess is going to have her tonsils out early next month. A glance at my calender tells me that we’re getting close to the end of this month.

It’s starting to weigh heavily on my mind. Such a big thing for such a little person to go through. I’ve done it before when her brother’s tonsils came out…but it’s all new for her. She seems smaller than he was…well she is by around a year. I hope she will be alright…but they HAVE to come out.

Here’s why.

can you see them?

Can you see them back there?

All but cutting off her air way?

No?

Well for the squeemish you might not want to scroll down any further.

uuugh

They’re hideous things…and this photo was taken when she’s well!

I just wish it was over and done with and not looming on the horizon.

never going to be cool

Posted by Jenny on Feb 18 2009 | Original Patterns, Sewing

Confession Time….I dream of being a funky stitcher. I wish I knew just the right colours to go with just the right shapes and the money to buy all the sewing equipment that my heart desires. Turns out I’m not a funky stitcher. I have no colour sense and I continue to make do with vintage or recycled fabrics that match my budget.

it starts with a drawing

I had been thinking of this little creature. She would be a doll. One that would fit in the palm of your hand. She would have a wonky belly panel of felt with a little felt heart. I was going to ‘drop my feed dogs’ and free hand a little bee trail from the heart. It was going to happily frolic around her little felt tummy and look cool.  Turns out my pathological fear of uncontrolled feed dogs continues to plague me, sooo, a hand stitched trail it was! She could even have bunny ears…and a tail! Oh the possibilities. Then it struck me…she could have a little pouch. She could carry something like the little gnomes!

gnomish

Or a baby bunny! Oh how my mind raced!

Buuut…in an attempt to be cool (anyone who knows me will testify that I AM NEVER GOING TO BE COOL!) I picked some nice…and not so nice fabrics! I then combined them very unsuccessfully!

In my haste to make her as quickly as possible (while also trying to co-ordinate a sewing craft-a-thon with both children) I stitched her arms on crooked! And apparently made two grossly different sized french knots for her eyes!

In the end I know that she’s just a little prototype. A fabric sketch that has to happen so you can find out if things fit….but she just didn’t do it for me on so many levels. I am however holding out hope that if I make her…and don’t try to be cool…she might find her way into my heart.

mouse bed

Until then this little lady is being used as a gussied up mousey bed.

Hey at least the kids like her right?!
