sister mae

matilda\'s sister mae

Well, Matilda is no longer on her own. She has a sister. Her name’s Mae.

I never cease to amaze myself with the fact that I can NEVER make the same thing ‘the same’ twice. I’m either good at creating individual pieces….or I’m a hopeless stitcher who can’t replicate her own work….hmmmm.

Mae is made out of woollen blanketing while Matilda was made from calico. I loved using the wool. It’s firm yet soft at the same time. It’s a fantastic little ‘flesh fabric’. I can’t wait to use it again.

I treated the face differently than Matilda’s. Matilda’s eyes were felt. Mae’s eyes are embroidered. It also offered the opportunity to sculpt Mae’s face a little. Her face looks completely different to Matilda’s….and for the life of me I can’t decide which face I like the most. Although I do like the little smirk that Mae has ended up with!

I really like it that this pattern came together with so little fuss. With only a few tweakings it has become what I imagined it to be. I guess the only thing left to do is to make more and see how different they look to their sisters!

play dough mask

This is what happens when my son spends too much time with my brother!

I’m not sure who’s idea it was. No actually I do, it was my brother’s….but The Golden Child was only toooo happy to take the ball and run with it.

Who said play dough was only for toddlers?

Sorry about the quality of the photo. It’s hard to focus and laugh your butt off at the same time.

Oh dear me!

waltzing matilda

Well the market is done and dusted. All in all it was a bit of a quiet night for me. You can never pick things like that I suppose. There wasn’t a complete lack of interest though. I got to chat to some lovely ladies about what it is that I do and why I do it (still trying to justify the time that I waste to my husband though! Poor man). I would have posted a picture of the table and rack all set up….but I forgot to take my camera. What made me think that I could be a good blogger?

Since leaving the market hype behind me I have had a little sit back and a think about what I would like’ to make next instead of what I think I need’ to make next.

The answer is dolls. In so many things in my life…the answer is dolls.

This little girl’s recipe was written over the weekend and she’s the first little lady to come to life from it.

matilda

She is only made out of calico. My next doll I will trial in some wool blanketing material.

She has existed in my mind in one form or other for about six months now.

dolly plans

Her legs and feet have been on my work table as a template for weeks now (alright…months). Every now and then catching my eye and crying out to become part of a little doll.  I was always finding something else that needed to be done first. I think they call that avoidance…or maybe a fear of failure….

She has all of the things that I wanted her to have. I love the shape of her feet (they were the thing that my husband was the least sure of).

I finally had a chance to try a felt ‘wig’ for a doll. I hope that I have managed to retain the ‘rag doll-ness’ that I needed her to have so that she could meet my expectations. You see I was raised with the ultimate rag doll, Jemima from ABC Play School.

That might explain the choice of facial features that I made! I think my doll needs a smaller mouth now that I have had a bit more of a think about her.

I have to say though, the hardest part of her was her hair. I have never had any experience of making hair using felt like this. It was a pretty hit and miss affair until I remembered Kathy from Lizzie Jane giving me some advice back when I posted about ‘how a design comes about’.  She said that she cuts her patterns out of fabric and begins creating on a bit of a wing and a prayer….fair enough. She makes some beautiful little creations so there must be merit in her method. With calico in hand I began wrapping it and moulding it around her head until I had the size, dart placement and shape the way I wanted.

It worked a treat. There is so much value in sharing your knowledge with others.

TLPB embroidery

Her frock was made with some vintage fabric my girlfriend Nat gave me for my birthday and some lime homespun. The finishing touch came from The Little Bush Princess. One of her little Koala drawings embroidered into the skirt.

Can’t wait to make more!

spam avoidance

Posted by Jenny on Oct 24 2008 | Day to dayness

For the past few days spammers have been DRIVING ME NUTS!!!

My inbox has been full to overflowing with their junk.

Hubby has ridden in on his technical white charger and installed another spam filter.

Now to leave a comment you will have to perform a little pop quiz maths test.

As long as you remember to do the multiplication first you should have no worries.

If there are any hassles with this new filter please send me an email jenny@frazzydazzles.com and let me know about it.

SPAM THAT SPAMMERS!
