what to make for this year?

Posted by Jenny on May 31 2008 | Original Patterns, Sewing

Today marks the last day of ‘post a day in May’. I thought I would take a little walk through the park and reminisce. Every year I start sewing about now for a big market that I go to in a nearby town at Christmas time.

I know it sounds like an early start but with Christmas being the busy time that it is there is just no time then to sit at a machine for hours and hours a day.

These were my big sellers from last year.  They are the first stage of the evolution of weary wabbits. These ones are not so weary!

I need to start thinking of something for this year.

flat weary wabbit

Well everyone seemed to like the fish heads! I have had a request from Lisa to see them being modeled by the kidlets. I have to say the children have not been well today. The Golden Child stayed home from school today and spent large swags of his time on the lounge watching DVD’s and resting. As I write this I need to go and wake The Little Bush Princess up so she doesn’t sleep for too long now and then not sleep tonight. I just never like waking a sleeping child.

As part of ‘a post a day in May’ (which is drawing to a close) I do need to show you all something daily. You will have to indulge me because this isn’t something that came into the world today. It’s a pillow case that I made on the weekend when I found myself with time to sew and no children feeling ill! I had been working on it on and off for a few days. Just never finding the time to finish it off.

It is part of the evolution of the weary wabbits. It is a lot bolder than I imagined it would be. The Little Bush Princess likes it so I guess that’s all that matters!

fish heads

fish heads

The Golden Child had a ‘Mad Hatters Tea Party’ at school this week to help raise funds for cancer research. The children were to wear a hat to school (other than their uniform hat!) and bring a gold coin donation. So I started thinking about ‘mad hats’….

…My Mum had been around earlier in the week and dropped off a rough pattern for a ‘helmet’ styled hat. I was looking at that and came up with a sketch.

Fish are still on my mind. The eye, tail and fins were very reminiscent of these guys.

The rest was just translating it into something warm enough for winter…polar fleece. Something with a bit of stretch…polar fleece…and something bright and ‘mad hatter’ like…polar fleece! So polar fleece they are!

The teeth were just to add to that ‘mad’ element to them! The Little Bush Princess loves the teeth. She points to her teeth and says that she has little teeth in her mouth and big teeth on her hat. Too cute for words!

So there you have it ‘Mad Hatter Fish Heads’. I am just happy that it is a project that I started and actually finished! Now I am off to try and get some sewing done for the school production. I can feel that particular clock ticking rather keenly at the moment!

Cheers!

what’s on the bench?

princess on the bench

The Little Bush Princess rarely resists the urge to get up on the bench when play dough is being made. She has a weakness for soft, warm, coloured dough….

hands on

…and what could be better than getting your hands into that gooey fun?…

feet on

….I know! How about getting your feet in on some of that warm fuzzy action?

Wish I was three!

blanket stitched baby love

blanket stitched

The weekend saw me actually finish a few things. This was one of them. A polar fleece blanket. Double thickness and embossed with stars for my girlfriend’s little son.

The cold weather is closing in and with older children she has no choice but to take him out in the cold…school runs need to be made…dance lessons need to be danced!

I made one of these when The Little Bush Princess was born and I made one for her little daughter at about the same time.

It seems only fair that this little man have one of his own. Just a simple blanket stitch around the edge to zazz it up a bit. Blanket stitch just screams baby doesn’t it?

Ha! I even managed to make it green. Will I ever get over this green thing? I hope not.

I hope it keeps him nice and warm.
